Small-scale flow field in a sunspot penumbra

چکیده

We have measured velocity maps of a round sunspot near the center of the solar disk. We derive the small-scale velocity field of the penumbra in the deep photosphere. Superimposed on a radial outflow, we find up– and downflows, which are associated with bright and dark features: The flow in the dark component of the penumbra has a larger inclination angle with respect to the surface normal than the bright component, everywhere in the penumbra. The maximum inclination difference is 8◦. In the inner and mid penumbra, bright features (penumbral grains) are associated with an upflow of about 0.6 km s−1. At the outer spot boundary, the flow is inclined downwards predominantly in the dark component (−7◦).

Physical Properties of the Solar Magnetic Photosphere under the Misma Hypothesis Iii: Sunspot at Disk Center

Small-scale fluctuations of magnetic field and velocity may be responsible for the Stokes asymmetries observed in all photospheric magnetic structures (the MISMA hypothesis). We support the hypothesis showing that atmospheres with optically-thin micro-structure reproduce the polarization of Fe I λ6301.5 Å and Fe I λ6302.5 Å observed in a sunspot. Ten thousand spectra were fitted by model MISMAs...

Theoretical Models of Sunspot Structure and Dynamics

Recent progress in theoretical modeling of a sunspot is reviewed. The observed properties of umbral dots are well reproduced by realistic simulations of magnetoconvection in a vertical, monolithic magnetic field. To understand the penumbra, it is useful to distinguish between the inner penumbra, dominated by bright filaments containing slender dark cores, and the outer penumbra, made up of dark...

Fine structure, magnetic field and heating of sunspot penumbrae

We interpret penumbral filaments as due to convection in field-free, radially aligned gaps just below the visible surface of the penumbra, intruding into a nearly potential field above. This solves the classical discrepancy between the large heat flux and the low vertical velocities observed in the penumbra. The presence of the gaps causes strong small-scale fluctuations in inclination, azimuth...

The Evershed Flow and the Brightness of the Penumbra

The Evershed flow is a systematic motion of gas that occurs in the penumbra of all sunspots. Discovered in 1909, it still lacks a satisfactory explanation. We know that the flow is magnetized, often supersonic, and that it shows conspicuous fine structure on spatial scales of 0.2′′–0.3′′, but its origin remains unclear. The hope is that a good observational understanding of the relation between...
